Recently, we conducted research to find out why people started their online businesses.

When we asked this question to many successful online publishers, we thought we already knew the answer – MONEY.

But we were wrong.

There were many different reasons why people got started. Here are some of them.

Individuals told us:

  • *        “I wanted to become independent. I didn’t want anyone else to control my future.”
  • *        “My pension was lower than I had hoped, so I needed a way of supplementing my retirement income whilst not going back to a full-time job.”
  • *        “I wanted to build a life around my hobby. I wanted to enjoy my job, not spend every weekday looking forward to the weekend.”
  • *        “I wanted to move to Spain, but still needed to have a regular income.”
  • *        “I was made redundant twice, so I decided I had to take control of my own life so it couldn’t happen a third time.”
  • *        “I wrote a book, but after an initial windfall of royalties, the income quickly dried up, so I turned the book and my knowledge into a subscription website. Now I get a regular income.”

Business people told us:

  • *         “We had so much valuable knowledge that was being wasted, we decided to set up a website to generate money from it.”
  • *          “Once we setup an industry leading website, we became recognised as industry leaders. This has revolutionised our business.”
  • *        “We set up our website to generate leads for our consulting business, but subscriptions to the site have now become the company’s biggest revenue stream.”
  • *        “I was in the mining business for twenty years, travelling around the world. I wanted a more settled life, whilst making the most of the knowledge and contacts that I had built up. Creating a membership website for senior managers in the industry was an obvious choice.”

Whatever your motivation and drive for creating a successful content driven website, if you do it with passion and determination, it will change your life.
