It is very useful to know how your website's popularity is growing (or falling). It's also very important to continually monitor how popular your competitor's sites are.
There are many ways of researching a website's popularity, but it has always been a time consuming process requiring visiting five or six websites.
Last week, the process was hugely simplified.
A new website was launched which enables you to simply type in a domain name and the tool collects the data from all the other sites and displays the result on a single page.

The results are gathered from the following sources:
- Google PageRank – Google assigns a page rank between 0 and 10 to every website. Ten is the highest and is reserved for sites with massive traffic such as Google.com. Even bbc.co.uk and youtube.com are only 8.
- Alexa Rank – Alexa estimates how a website ranks amongst the 64 million plus websites on the internet. A site in the top 100k is doing very well.
- Google Backlinks – the number of inbound links indexed by Google to a particular website. An inbound link is simply a link from a third party website your website. Google uses inbound links to decide on a site's Page Rank and where it should appear on the search results page
- Yahoo! Backlinks - the number of inbound links indexed by Yahoo! to a particular website. Yahoo! uses this as one measure to help determine where to place a website on the search results page.
- Live Search Backlinks - the number of inbound links indexed by Microsoft Live Search to a particular website. Live Search uses this as one measure to help determine where to place a website on the search results page.
- Technorati Inbound Links – Technorati is a search engine for blogs. The measure of inbound links is the number of mentions of a particular site in the blogs tracked by Technorati search. The more links the better. It means people are talking about your site.
- Del.icio.us Bookmarks – Del.icio.us is a website where people can bookmark your website so they can find it again and also recommend it to their friends. The more bookmarks a site gets the better. It shows that people like your site enough to want to share their find with others.
- Bloglines – Similar to del.icio.us and Techorati, Bloglines enables web users to bookmark their favourite pages. The more Bloglines entries the more popular your website
- Whois – the Whois record shows who owns a website
