SubHub spoke with Kellie Davis, Co-Founder of Get Glutes. Davis earned her BA from Florida Gulf Coast University and her Master’s in Professional Studies from George Washington University. Her passion for fitness and love of writing ignited a sound career in fitness and nutrition. Above all, her deepest passion resides in helping women grow in strength both physically and emotionally through the empowerment of fitness.

Kellie, can you tell us a little bit about your background and what led to you to setting up your site?
“We began our project in January 2013 on our own. Being that the (then) three of us had backgrounds in fitness but zero background in site development, our first launch was a flop. We had so many technical errors: members couldn’t log in, videos wouldn’t buffer. You name it, we experienced it.”

“After a month of chaos we hired a one-off developer to rebuild the site for us. He did a decent job, but was hit or miss as far as contact went, and the site was never updated. We would get emails asking if we were still in business. The sales page was unpolished and the interior of the site looked more like a blog than a membership site.”

“The site was also run on WordPress and no one had been maintaining updates. Plugins stopped working and I knew it wasn’t long before the site would crash. I looked for an all-encompassing solution that would help rebuild the site, make it more professional, have all the bells and whistles, and also provide built-in customer support.”

Why did you decide to use SubHub?
SubHub showed up in a Google search, and it was a natural fit. They offered everything I needed with no hidden costs and were able to get started right away. How involved were you in developing the website, and did you have any experience in creating a website before?
“I have a bit of working knowledge when it comes to websites, but it’s not my area of expertise. I was able to work on a lot of the HTML aspects of the site once the framework was implemented, but I left the backend development up to SubHub. It’s a great additional service they offer and I am so glad I took advantage of it.”

How hands on are you with updating your site? Do you create everything yourself, do you have any staff, or do you outsource?
“I am pretty happy with how the site looks and can easily update navigation, add images, change font colors, etc. However, I do recruit the amazing SubHub team to help me with any major updates or anything involving CSS. They are very reasonable when it comes to hiring one-off services and respond quickly.”

How much time do you spend updating your website?
“I add fresh new content every week and we have a very active online forum. We don’t make a lot of structural changes to the site as we are happy with how it looks. I am on the site interacting in some way each day, whether it’s answering questions in the forum, adding new videos or blog posts, or changing around images.”

How do you interact with members and what’s the key to keeping them happy?
“We have an online forum that works really well for member engagement. SubHub allowed us to be a part of their beta test for a new forum system and my members love it. We also have a private Facebook group, sending out emails through MailChimp, and have specific hashtags that we use to help members locate each other in different social media settings.”

How has SubHub enabled you to grow?
SubHub has enabled us to grow by designing and developing a beautiful, professional site that is informative and easy to navigate. What kind of content is most popular on your website and why do you think that is?
“Members love the workout videos. They give really detailed explanations of the exercises and also help members stay engaged with the coaches.”

How have you grown your email subscribers and how do you manage them?
“Right now the only lead capture we have is the free trial. We plan to implement other ways of growing our list in the new year. If a free trial member sticks around and becomes a paying subscriber, we keep them on the subscriber email list. If they leave before their trial ends, we move them to a general list where we still send out great information, offers, and updates without giving them access to new content within the membership area.”

How important is your website for your business?
My website is my business. We run everything through the website and it’s the key to our success. We don’t send out workouts in emails or via eBook. Everything is run through the membership area, so without the site there would be no business.”

What has been the most effective way to drive traffic to your website?
“We have had a lot of success through Facebook referral traffic. We are also exploring Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.”

From your experience, what are the basic steps somebody needs to take to setup and develop a successful website?
“I would highly recommend letting SubHub do the work for you. Their fees are reasonable and their staff is excellent. I’ve gone the route of setting it up myself and hiring a contract developer. SubHub by far gave me the best experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

What advice would you give somebody thinking about starting their own website with SubHub?
“Go in with a clear idea of what you want your business to look like, how you want to interact with members, and the message you want users to receive when they land on your site. Explore the web to find other sites that are similar to what you envision. Give your developers a lot of examples and clear details on your expectations. Communication is also key, so interact with your team as much as possible to make sure they have a good vision of your business.”
