Back in 2003, two experienced internet entrepreneurs, Evan Rudowski and Miles Galliford, wanted to launch a series of niche content websites.  
 
They made a list of their requirements, which they thought were fairly straightforward.
 

They wanted to:
 
  • Rapidly create new sites
  • Have control over the way their sites looked
  • Enable non-technical writers to add new articles
  • Easily add images to their pages
  • Generate money from advertising, subscriptions and e-commerce

Finally, they wanted someone else to take care of all the hosting, bandwidth, maintenance and backups.

They were sure that such a service must exist.

They scoured the market from the US to New Zealand and from the UK to India.

There were lots of products that did some of the things they wanted, but they found no product that met all of their needs.
 
A lot of web development companies offered their services, but the quotes for bespoke websites were over £10,000/$20,000 each, and this didn’t include the monthly hosting, bandwidth and management charges.
 
The more they researched the market, the more people they found with exactly the same requirements. They spoke with individual experts, researchers, consultants, public speakers, authors, associations and clubs, all of whom were looking for a simple, flexible publishing solution that would enable them to generate revenue from their content. 
 
As a result of this research, Evan and Miles decided to build their own platform from scratch to fill this big hole in the market.
 
SubHub was founded in 2004 with the sole aim of building an affordable solution for publishers who wanted to control their own site and have the option to make money in different ways from their content. They wanted it to be comprehensive yet simple to use; fully managed, but would leave the publisher in control.
 
The first version of the platform was launched at the end of 2005, having been built from the ground up.
 
The SubHub platform is now in its fourth release and is improving every month.
